Quite an eventful day on the river!
Unluckily, Queen's W2 had to concede to Exeter 2 only a few seconds before the division was klaxoned.
Queen's M2 had a memorable race. They were bumped just after Donnington bridge by Lincoln, and got out of the way in time to see Wolfson 2 bump Brasenose 2. Those two crews did not manage to evacuate the racing line in time, but for some reason, the race was not klaxoned. St Anne's 2 and Regent's Park somehow avoided a full collision, but there was simply nowhere to go for Pembroke 3, who ended up on Queen's boat. At that point, the marshals finally realized that the race had to be klaxoned - something that four crews and twenty spectators had been shouting at them for over 30 seconds. Thankfully, the Queen's cox had good reflexes and jumped out of her seat to seek refuge between 7 and stroke just before her seat was covered by the Pembroke boat, but both boats were damaged and they seemed locked together. Despite the advice of two dozen people on the bank and a marshal on a rescue boat, there was no untangling Pembroke's bow and Queen's stroke. The rescue boat decided it would be a good idea to try to push Pembroke out of the way, but a boat is not a dodgem so that only damaged the Pembroke boat even further. After several minutes, there was consensus that the only solution was for two Queenies and two Pembrokesmen to jump in the water and separate the boats by hand, which they did. The Queen's boat suffered only minor damage, but the same cannot be said of Pembroke. Both colleges have lodged complaints against OURCs, since all this could have been avoided had the race been klaxoned on time.
Queen's W1 were chasing Keble and got within a length in the gut, but then Keble bumped Wolfson and all W1 could do was row over.
Queen's M1's tiller was broken shortly after the start. Having lost control of the steering, the cox had no choice but to easy and concede to avoid crashing into the bank.
In the top divisions, Teddy Hall and Christ Church rowed over, keeping the women's and men's headships respectively. Pembroke M1 bumped Balliol to become 2nd on the river and will hope to take the headship from an impressive Christ Church tomorrow.
The races tomorrow will be one hour than usual:
- 12.45pm: Queen's W2, 8th in div 5, chasing Exeter 2 and chased by St Hugh's 2.
- 1.20pm: Queen's M2, 5th in div 5, chasing Lincoln 2 and chased by Osler 1.
- 4.15pm: Queen's W1, 7th in div 2, chasing Wolfson and chased Exeter.
